Happy Birthday to My Mother-In-Law
Today is my mother-in-law’s birthday. You may remember her – I have written about her. She is the gracious Southern lady who saved our away-from-my-own-kitchen Christmas Eve dinner by incredibly packing grits in her bag. And it’s her baked beans recipe that has gotten rave reviews. She’s our matriarch and we adore her.
If you’re so inclined, drop her a Happy Birthday comment below. I would post a pic or include her name, but she hates attention drawn to herself and will more than likely be embarrassed that I’ve written this. I’m willing to take that chance on this milestone birthday. I also have something I want to tell her.
We understand that this stage of life is not for sissies. It’s tough and it’s difficult to give up some of your independence. But please know this. We are calling you because we want to talk with you. We are stopping by because we want to spend time with you. Yes, we want to know if you need anything or if we can do something for you, but that’s because we care about you and want you to have what you need. It’s not out of obligation. It’s out of love. Please don’t worry when you need us for any reason. We are not too busy. You have always taken care of us. Now it’s our turn. It’s what families are all about and being needed isn’t always such a bad thing.
My mom died when I was 10. When I think about it, I see God looking down on my ten-year-old-self, an angel by his side. He turns to the angel and says, “This is a tough one. This little girl is going to miss her mom. Keep track of her. When the time comes for her to get a mother-in-law, make sure she gets one of our best”.
And that’s how it happened. I got one of the best.
